End of Life Care…Elsie’s Story

Elsie lived with her husband in extra care and was diagnosed with liver cancer. As Elsie’s health deteriorated, her husband could not cope with supporting Elsie alone and requested additional support from Social Services. Care Support was given the care package to support Elsie. We undertook the assessment and personalised support planning and discussed end of life choices.

When asked about end of life wishes, Elsie stated that she wished to remain and die in her home at the Extra Care Scheme with her family close by. We developed an end of life care plan and ensured that these wishes were recorded.

We put in place a care package of 4 double handed care visits per day as Elsie was too weak to transfer independently. We provided support at the times requested by Elsie and her family. Within a couple of weeks Elsie’s health started to fail; she became very weak and was unable to get up. We engaged Occupational Therapists and obtained special equipment, such as a profile bed and airflow mattress, to maximise Elsie’s comfort.

We worked with the District Nurses, Macmillan Nurses and the GP for pain relief and a local hospice for additional support for Elsie and her family. Our staff are trained in providing palliative care and have the compassion and expertise in dealing with customers that have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Elsie died at home with the dignity that she deserved and knowing her loving family was by her side.
