Tenacity and passion to improve quality of life…Helen’s Story

When we first started supporting Helen who has dementia, she would not eat – she refused food and spat it out or made herself sick.  The situation meant that her weight and lack of fluid intake were causing health concerns.   At a multi-agency meeting, it was suggested that Helen would have to move from extra care to residential care.  Care Support offered to try to change her diet and solve the problem to prevent Helen having to move.

Care Support encouraged (with the use of pictures) Helen to communicate about what food she liked and disliked, particularly what she had liked when she was younger and then a new food plan was created.  We also ensured that Helen had a one key worker and encouraged Helen to participate in the preparation of meals.  Helen now enjoys and makes choices about her food and concerns about her weight and fluid intake have receded and she has been able to remain at the extra care scheme.

“I am very happy with my carers. They treat me very nicely and with respect and honour. I really love having them around and to Care Support, your services are very satisfactory. Keep it up.”
