Our Residents celebrated the 75th anniversary of Windrush Day, with some traditional food and music while listening to the history of Windrush. ‘This is a day to celebrate the arrival of the Empire Windrush in Tilbury Docks, Essex, on 22 June 1948. The ship carried 1027 Caribbean people who had come to the UK to help rebuild the country after the Second World War. The Windrush passengers were full of hope and excitement about their new life in the UK.  However, the Windrush generation faced many challenges when they arrived to their new home, including racism, discrimination, and poverty. However, they persevered and overcame adversity, and made significant contributions to British society in all areas, from helping to build the NHS and rail network to the arts, food and music’ – Olive Jones, Director of People at the National Housing Federation
